HFS 2.0 Issues

Some users may experience technical difficulties when attempting to access HFS 2.0.

This is because of the higher level of security inherent in the new version. The new version uses 128-bit encryption whereas the previous version used 40-bit. Most older browsers have the 40-bit encryption, but not the 128-bit.

HFS 2.0 is designed for and works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or higher or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or higher running on a PC. Older versions of these browsers simply will not work because their encryption strength is only 40-bit.

What Kind of Web Browser Am I Using?

At the very top left of your default browser window will be the page title. For instance, Linn Area Credit Union’s home page has a title of “Linn Area Credit Union”. Following the page title will be the type of browser: either “Internet Explorer” or “Netscape Navigator”.

Right below the page title and browser type is a line of drop down menus labeled File, Edit, View, etc..……… The last option will be Help. Click the word Help, then click on About (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator). Among the items listed in the window that appears will be your browser version #. Remember, to view HFS 2.0 in Internet Explorer you will have to have at least version 5.0 and for Netscape Navigator you must have version 4.7 or higher.

Special notes for Internet Explorer users:
It’s easy to see your encryption strength in Internet Explorer. Right below your version # in the “About Internet Explorer” window is a line that reads Cipher Strength. It will read either 40-bit, 56-bit or 128-bit.

40-bit = Are you using Internet Explorer 5?
If YES, scroll down to the Internet Explore 5 section
If NO, you must update your browser (see next section).

56-bit = Is your operating system Windows 2000?
If YES, scroll down to the Windows 2000 section.
If NO you must update your browser (see next section).

128 bit = You should be able to view HFS 2.0.

Where Can I Get a Newer Version of my Web Browser?

To get the latest version of Internet Explorer (IE6) go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/ie6/download.asp
and follow the on-screen instructions.

To get the latest version of Netscape Navigator go to http://wp.netscape.com/computing/download/index.aspl?cp=brictrpr2
and follow the on-screen instructions.

Note that on a dial up connection these download can take several hours.

I’m Using IE5. Is there an easier way?

If you’re using Internet Explorer 5 you can download the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack by going to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/128bit/default.asp and downloading the appropriate file from the choices on the right.

Read and follow the instructions.

Windows 2000

Some versions of Windows 2000 will not allow 128 bit encryption regardless of the web browser you are using.

If your Cipher Strength reads 56-bit please go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/default.asp
and download the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack.
