The Cookie Poll: Iowa vs. Iowa State  by Tara

Team Marion cookiesA house divided???

Our Marion team fueled the Iowa vs. Iowa State feud with their very special cookie promo! All day long members delightfully decorated cookies in their team’s colors.

Which team do you think had the most cookies represented??? While you ponder your answer, here’s a pic of our Marion team (aren’t they lovely??) :

Team Marion Picture

And, just in case you were wondering, those in the drive weren’t left out! Our account reps even served cookies to those members who didn’t come inside. Take a moment and imagine the kids’ eyes when they 1) heard there were COOKIES and 2) got these cookies decorated in true Hawk, State or smiley faced fashion.

Just another way we show how much we LOVE our members. :o)

Treasure Hunting  by Matt

Treasure ChestWould you believe that there is a magical place where lost things have been found, and someone’s trying to give it back to you? Would you believe that this fantastic person is backed by a whole office of assistants who want nothing but to help you find what was long ago forgotten? It’s not a genie in a Cave of Wonders, but for some, it can still end in treasure!

I’m talking about the Treasurer’s office of the State of Iowa and the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt! Maybe you’ve heard of their site, maybe you’ve seen their booth at the State Fair, but their primary job is to collect forgotten possessions, and reunite them with their owners. Most people who are familiar with this program are aware that the Treasure Hunt collects forgotten or lost account balances, but did you know they also collect things like safe deposit box contents, lost checks that were never cashed, or even unclaimed stock? There’s a lot of lost stuff out there!

I suppose you wonder how things like these can be “lost”. I mean, I don’t usually forget about my checking account…though it sometimes tries to forget me after I abuse it with some shopping, but in reality, it’s not usually like that. Often it’s related to someone moving away, or maybe never knowing they even had an account. Maybe Grandma opened an account to save for your college expenses, but never told you about it. Many times it’s due to the owner passing away and beneficiaries never finding the property.

So now the important part…how can you get your hands on anything out there that might be yours?? It’s crazy easy. Just visit their website at to see if there’s anything out there for you. If you jump on it quick enough, you just might just find yourself a few extra coins to spend on something nice for the holidays!

Have a story about you or someone you know that’s found success with the Treasure Hunt? Comment and share!

Our Glowing Event  by Tara

Balloon Glow 2013-1

We are big believers in family traditions. Every year we share one of our favorite Linn Area family traditions with our community – the Balloon Glow. This well-known event is part of Freedom Festival (it’s our favorite part, but we’re a little biased!). Heck, nearly 17,000 people enjoyed it last year alone!

Yet again, we are sponsoring this family evening. Do note that it’s FREE with your Freedom Festival button and buttons can be bought at the gate. Kids age 5 and under do NOT need a button! Balloon Glow will be held Tuesday, June 20th at Brucemore. Gates open at 5:30 pm. Additional details can be found here (parking, shuttle buses, etc.).

To say that this event “is for young and old alike” may sound super cheesy, but it’s the honest to goodness truth! I remember going on one of my first dates with my now husband to Balloon Glow. I packed us a picnic basket full of yummy treats and some choice beverages and away we went for a lovely evening of music and picturesque views.

And I can’t even explain to you how much the kids LOVE this event. Whether it’s running up for their 5th Linn Area hot air balloon tattoo, grooving along to the music or ohh-ing and aww-ing over the hot air balloons, kids totally dig this family night out.

This year you’ll be entertained from 7:00-10:00 pm by the foot tapping, chair dancing, make you want to DANCE sounds of the Airwaves, an awesome local band. Ready for a taste of what sort of fun is ahead? Check out their website at

Don’t forget to say hi to all the familiar Linn Area faces as you come in through the entrances! We’ll be the ones putting the hot air balloon tattoos on all willing participants! Around 40 of us will be there that night – even some of our very own family members will be lending a hand, as well!

Feel free to take pics and post them to our Facebook Page or Tweet @LinnAreaCU with them.

Tell us in the comments below: What’s your favorite Balloon Glow memory?

Our Little Science Experiment  by Tara

With the record cold keeping the kids home from school and everyone else shivering to their core, we thought this would be the perfect time for a little science experiment! After seeing videos circulating the Web showcasing people throwing hot water into the air to create snow or a steamy mist, we just HAD to try it for ourselves:

Have you done this yet?? Make sure you stand the opposite way of the wind, or else you just might end up like a coach following a winning football game. ;) How are you keeping busy during these super, ridiculously cold days?

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas (LACU Style)  by Ellen

‘Twas the night before Christmas at LACU
Everyone was busy, so much to do!
People all working their busy shifts
Kids picking up their Kirby Christmas gifts.

Our members came in, bundled up tight
Excited for the gatherings they’re going to tonight
With cars in the drive-up and people in line
We all settled in to help them on time.

When in from the parking lot there arose such a clatter
We all were wondering what was the matter.
Everyone looked and the wave of heads bobbed
We wanted to be sure we weren’t getting robbed.

There was water on the floor because of the snow
Which made the entryway slick on the tile floor below.
When, what to our wondering eyes do we find
But a little old lady who fell on her behind.

This small woman, didn’t miss a beat
Popped up in a moment – right to her feet.
Into her giant handbag she tucked her rain bonnet
Pulled out a list, yelled out what she had on it.

“I want high yield checking! A rewards credit card, stat!
Get me a notary! Some gift cards! What are you looking at?
A Roth IRA, a Health Savings Account, too!
And some of those Plugged In services for my great-nephew!

One of our members, who was waiting in line
Watched the whole scene, chuckling from time to time.
Finally he asked, “I don’t mean to sound trite
But what is the deal with that old lady tonight?”

Before we could answer, we heard a pick-up’s roar
And a big fat old man suddenly stood in the door.
His eyes how they twinkled! His beard was so white!
The stump of a pipe he held in his teeth tight.

He walked up to the woman and said “Hello, dear.”
We said, “Mr. Claus! Good to see you! You can’t smoke in here!”
Greetings exchanged, paperwork completed, glad-handing.
Then the couple addressed all of the members still standing.

Mrs. Claus said “I was just bustin’ your britches, you sweet little dears.
Santa and I have been Linn Area members for years.
We needed to refinance our truck loan, you see.
Why not have a Children’s Miracle Network candy bar – on me?

We passed out the chocolate as they stepped outside
Climbed up in their truck and prepared for the ride.
We heard them exclaim as they revved out of sight,
“Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
