Earth Day 2022 Cleanup in the Parks

Group of Linn Area employees holding up garbage bags after cleanup at Daniels Park

In honor of Earth Day, we took the City Manager’s 1 Bag Challenge at Daniels Park and Bever Park! Twenty Linn Area employees and family members volunteered after work on Thursday, April 21, to pick up litter in the Cedar Rapids parks.

We had 10 volunteers at Daniels Park, and we were pleasantly surprised at how little trash there was! We worked in teams and individually, focusing on the grounds around the play areas, parking lots, and roads. Our volunteers spent roughly an hour and a half picking up micro-trash (and a lot of it!), like cigarette butts, small bits of wrappers, and pieces of Styrofoam — things that can be easily overlooked when there are larger items.

The 10 volunteers at Bever Park spent most of their time cleaning up the creek banks. The group collected nine bags of trash in an hour and a half!

It was an absolutely gorgeous evening, and it was both fun and fulfilling to do our part to take care of our community’s parks.
